How I save water: This housing society has adopted grey water harvesting
Source:http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/how-i-save-water-this-housing-society-has-adopted-grey-water-harvesting/ The society also holds meetings every 15 days to discuss water issues and what more can be done to save water. Facing an acute shortage of water due to reduced water supply from the PMC this summer, Orange County, Phase-II, a housing society on Pashan-Baner Link Road, is saving water by greywater harvesting, which is a method of processing waste water generated in households and treating it with the help of wetland or plants which purify it naturally with their roots. The method was adopted by the builder. “After the water is purified, it is stored in a tank, which is accessible through the taps in the society. We recycle at least 5,000 litres out of 20,000 litres of water consumed per day. The water recycled through grey water harvesting is used for gardening purposes, but is not potable because it still carries the odour. But we are planning to install a machine to recycle even that water. We use water economically and also impose a fine of Rs 500 on anyone found wasting water, which we monitor by keeping a check on the water level. Also, to avoid wastage of water, we supply water only three hours in […]
